Where Does Water Come From?
If a five-year-old ever asks you this question, the answer is “rain”. That’s it. That will be enough. A five-year-old has very little interest in the evaporation/precipitation cycle, and even less interest in hydrogen and oxygen and that they’ve been around since the big bang. By the time you get to the strong and weak nuclear forces, they’re ignoring you and have already gone back to coloring or watching Looney Tunes. So save your breath. Water comes from rain.

But if your answer is “God made it” I pity you. |

Agreed; more if your interested… But water doesn’t come from rain. Rain is water. Since matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it only changes form - that means that water is finite, and the exact amount that is on the Earth this minute, is also precisely the amount that we started with. I remember back in elementary school, the teacher told the class that right after lunch we were gonna study the water cycle. Almost everyone thought she said motorcycles, we were sad when we got back. |

Sorry Shifty, but I must argue. I don’t think conservation of mass applies to a compound like water. For instance, I can drop a 9V battery into a cup of water and watch it split into hydrogen and oxygen. As it bubbles, there is less water in the world. Now if you want to say that there is a finite amount of hydrogen and a finite amount of oxygen in the universe, well, I’d still argue with you. If I split a hydrogen atom, it will be converted into energy and the universe will have one less atom. Maybe a lot less if it kicks off a chain reaction. Now conservation of energy, they tell me, will always be true. In other news, I’m a know-it-all asshole. |

I saw a documentary on the earth and it said that water came from meteorites. Ice on the meteorite melted when it hit the earth and BAM the oceans started forming and all that other crap. Ignore the spelling mistakes because I did this on my iPod touch. |

“If I split a hydrogen atom….” |

I stand corrected, but could you please help me explain to Homeland Security why I was looking up the workings of the H Bomb? Wait, somebody’s pounding at my door…. |
